About SolsticeGlide

We are a Tokyo-based team of researchers, artists, and folklore specialists dedicated to documenting and sharing the living tradition of Japanese supernatural mythology.

Preserving the Spirit Realm Since 2011

SolsticeGlide was founded in 2011 by folklorist Kenji Mori and cultural historian Aya Nakamura, driven by a shared concern that centuries of oral yōkai tradition were being lost to modernisation. Their first project — a small bilingual archive of Edo-period yōkai prints held in private collections — grew into the organisation it is today.

Operating from a restored Meiji-era machiya in Asakusa, our team of eight researchers, two resident artists, and a network of contributing scholars across Japan and abroad maintains what is now one of the most comprehensive English-language resources on Japanese supernatural folklore in existence.

We collaborate with universities, museums, and individual collectors to preserve, digitise, and contextualise artefacts that might otherwise disappear — returning them to cultural life through exhibitions, workshops, and publications.

Principles That Guide Our Work

Authenticity & Rigour

Every claim we publish is sourced from primary historical texts, museum records, or documented oral traditions. We never sensationalise or fabricate folklore for entertainment.

Global Accessibility

Japanese mythology belongs to everyone. We present complex scholarly research in clear English, making it accessible to curious minds worldwide — from students to seasoned academics.

Active Preservation

We actively document endangered oral traditions, support conservation of physical artefacts, and digitise fragile manuscript sources before they are lost to time.

A Global Network of Yōkai Enthusiasts

From Tokyo to Toronto, our community spans six continents. We host quarterly workshops in Asakusa, conduct online seminars, and maintain an active research forum. Our publication archive contains over 400 catalogued spirit types, with new entries added regularly based on archival discoveries and community contributions.
